Michelle Tulchinskaya (SO/Buffalo Grove, Ill.) received the 2016 St. Louis College of Pharmacy Freshman of the Year award at the annual STLCOP Athletic Awards Ceremony on Jan. 22.
Tulchinskaya, now a sophomore on the women's tennis team, won the award through a vote of all STLCOP coaches. She was one of four nominees for the award, including Morgan Ellebrecht (Women's Soccer), Julia Huynh (Volleyball), and Morgan Rose (Women's Basketball).
As a freshman in the spring of 2016, Tulchinskaya stepped in to play No. 1 Singles and Doubles for the Eutectic squad. She finished the season with the best record in the American Midwest Conference at 15-2, tied for Conference Player of the Year, atop the 1st Team All-Conference list, and ranked 15th among all tennis players in the central region.
She shattered the previous STLCOP record for most wins in a season at No. 1 Singles, which was set at two. Along with her partner, Masha Kurenok (SR/Chesterfield, Mo.), she achieved another STLCOP record for most doubles wins with a 6-7 record for the season.
After earning two wins in two matches as a sophomore last fall, Tulchinskaya is ready to tackle the spring tennis season playing No. 1 for the Eutectics again. The team's first match is at 2:45 p.m. today at Tower Grove Park, when they host Rend Lake College.
