The Eutectic softball team lost both games of its doubleheader home opener today at Chesterfield Valley Athletic Complex against Midway University, 8-1 and 9-6.
In game one, Midway's leadoff batter Carly Benz started things off for the Eagles in the first inning with a single and a stolen base. This put her in position to be driven home by Tiffany Wickline's base hit.
At 1-0 after two innings, the Eagles scored two runs off of two hits in the top of the third to take a 3-0 lead over the Eutectics. As the Eutectic bats were mostly silent, the Eagles scored another four runs in the fourth, and sealed the deal with one more in the fifth to make it 8-0. After holding the Eutectics scoreless, the Eagles held an eight-run lead to win the game after five innings.
Winning pitcher Wickline earned the shutout for the Eagles, collecting nine strikeouts and no walks, and giving up only three hits. Lauren Wright (FR/Highland, Ill.) contributed two of those hits for the Eutectics, going 2-for-2 from the plate. Jessica Kirk (FR/Ballwin, Mo.) recorded the loss from the mound for the Eutectics, giving up 10 hits and four earned runs.
In game two, Benz reached base with a walk, and was brought home with back to back doubles from Gabby Bruner and Kelsey Gravens. All three Eagles scored in the top of the first, but this time, the Euts would not be shutout. As the second batter in the STLCOP lineup, Kate Toler (JR/DuQuoin, Ill.) reached first with a single and then advanced on a fielder's choice, a player hit by a pitch, and a wild throw to make it home. The score was 3-1, Eagles, after the first inning.
After a scoreless second inning, Benz again reached first on a walk in the top of the third, and then found a way to score. But, when the Eagles defense broke down in the bottom of the inning, the Eutectics took advantage of three errors to score two runs of their own. The score was 4-3, Eagles, going into the fourth.
The Eagles scored two more runs in the fourth, off two hits and a Eutectic error, then held the Euts at the plate to increase their lead to 6-3. After scoring another two runs and holding the STLCOP team in the fifth, the score was 8-3 when the Eagles extended their lead even further in the sixth, scoring one run off of two hits to make it 9-3. When the Eutectics took to the plate in the bottom of the sixth, Dewald's RBI double followed by Wright's RBI single brought the STLCOP team within arm's reach of MU.
The score was 9-5 going into the top of the seventh, when Sydney Vetter (SO/Sibley, Ill.) made a catch in right field and Dewald struck out two in a row to shut down the MU offense. In STLCOP's final chance at the plate, Lydia Braun (FR/Collinsville, Ill.) reached first on a walk, and made it home on an error and a double play fielder's choice to make it 9-6 with two outs. Eagles' pitcher Abby Flaig chose that moment to claim her fourth strikeout of the night, and close the win for MU.
Gravens led the Eagles' offense, going 4-for-4, including three doubles and two RBIs. The MU team collected 11 hits and seven errors. Flaig recorded the win.
Toler and Dewald both went 2-for-4. Dewald, who racked up a double, a stolen base, and an RBI for the Euts on offense, and seven strikeouts from the mound, was charged with the loss.
The Eutectics are now 2-2 for the season so far. Next up, they travel to Columbia, Mo., for their first American Midwest Conference competition at Columbia College on Friday, Mar. 10, at 2 p.m.
