Lauren Wright (FR/Highland, Ill.) recorded her first collegiate home run yesterday as the Eutectic softball team dropped two conference games at Columbia College (13-2).
The Columbia Cougars dominated from the start in both games. In game one, the Cougars took a 7-0 lead in in the first inning and built from there. After 21 hits, the Cougars claimed the win at 22-0. Kate Toler (JR/DuQuoin, Ill.) earned the STLCOP teams' only hit with a single up the middle in the top of the fourth. She also led the Eutectics with three put outs from short stop. Allyson Metz went 5-for-5 for CC, racking up six RBIs along with a double and a home run. Paxton Welch earned the win on the mound, while Jessica Kirk (FR/Ballwin, Mo.) took the loss for the Eutectics.
Wright made her mark as the third batter in game two. With two outs and a 3-2 count, she cranked a home run to put the Euts on the board. Despite the encouraging start, that would be the only STLCOP run of the day, as the Cougars racked up 14 runs in the bottom of the first. The CC team held the Eutectics in the second and third innings, while tacking on four more runs of their own in the second and another seven runs in the third. The Euts would made some threats in the fourth, when Lydia Braun (FR/Collinsville, Ill.) singled to second and Sydney Vetter (SO/Sibley, Ill.) singled to center, but the Euts could not convert those hits into runs, leaving the two players stranded. Neither team scored after that, but the game was called for Columbia in the bottom of the fifth at 25-1. CC's Alexandra Kirk went 3-for-4 to lead the Cougars with eight RBIs, two home runs and a double. Pitcher Lauren McCroskie was awarded the win for the Cougars. Allison Dewald (JR/Sutter, Ill.) was charged with the loss.
The Eutectics are now 2-4 (0-2 AMC). Their next doubleheader will be at home at Moody Park in Fairview Heights, Ill., on Wed., March 15, when they take on Crowley's Ridge College at 2 p.m.
