The STLCOP women's tennis team recorded a win at Westminster College and a loss at #8-ranked William Woods University in Fulton, Mo., over the weekend.
Traveling with only five players, the Lady Euts still managed to add another win to their record on Friday, by defeating Westminster College, 5-4 . STLCOP won both the top courts at doubles, 8-2, and lost the third through default. The No. 1 doubles team of Michelle Tulchinskaya (SO/Buffalo Grove, Ill.) and Emily Stevenson (FR/Florissant, Mo.) cruised to victory over Sydney Attebery and Clara Baldwin to extend their undefeated season record to 7-0. Jenna Smith (JR/Evansville, Ind.) and Kara Wesolowski (SO/Moro, Ill.) took down Alexa McPherson and Natalie Tiffany at No. 2 to put the Euts up 2-1 going into singles.
Tulchinskaya blasted through her singles match against Attebery at No. 1, winning 6-0, 6-1, to maintain her undefeated status (7-0). Stevenson lost her first match of the season to Baldwin in a Court-2 match that came down to a third-set tie-breaker, 7-6 (6), 3-6, 10-7. Masha Kurenok (SR/Chesterfield, Mo.) fell, 6-2, 6-2, to Tiffany at No. 3 to put the Eutectics down 4-3 until Smith and Wesolowski won Courts 4 and 5 to seal the victory for STLCOP. Smith defeated Laural Royer, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 4, while Wesolowski beat McPherson 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5.
On Saturday, the Euts faced #6-ranked William Woods University in their first AMC match of the season, falling 9-0 to the Owls. The WWU roster includes seven of the top-11 ranked players in the NAIA Central Region and four players ranked in the top 50 in the nation. Tulchinskaya and Stevenson dropped their undefeated status to Karyna Sagalai and Paige Smith at No. 1 doubles, 8-6. Smith and Wesolowski failed to win a game at No. 2 against Julia Mulder and Alba Salinas.
By defaulting Court 6, the Euts started singles down 4-0 to the Owls. WWU's Chelsea Steward handed Tulchinskaya her first singles loss of the season, winning 6-3, 6-2. Stevenson recorded her second singles loss of the weekend and the season to Felicia Cesar (ranked #49 nationally, #6 in the region), 6-1, 6-0. Smith and Wesolowski fell to their Court 4 and 5 opponents in 8-game pro-sets. Abigail Lemberger defeated Smith, 8-1, at No. 4, while P. Smith beat Wesolowski, 8-2, at No. 5.
The Lady Eutectics are now 6-2 for the season. On Friday, April 7, they will play their second AMC match of the season at Missouri Baptist University at Cadet Park in St. Louis, at 3 p.m.
