After three years off campus during construction, tonight the Eutectic volleyball team played the first competition in the new STLCOP gymnasium. The Euts fell 3-1 to the Lindenwood University-Belleville Lynx their first conference match of the season and what was billed as the AMC "Match of the Week."
In front of a large home crowd, the Euts came out strong, pulling ahead early in the first set, and winning it decisively at 25-15. In the second set, both teams battled back and forth, trading leads until the Lynx finally claimed the set at 28-26. The second set loss seemed to take some steam out of the Euts, as they fell 25-15 in the third, then 25-19 in the final set.
Statistics were similar on both sides of the net, but the Lynx were able to squeak out seven more kills and a slightly better hitting percentage. The Eutectic defensive front row, however, was effective, racking up 5 blocks throughout the match, with Mackenzie Wagner (SO/Walford, Iowa) and Busola Oginni (JR/St. Louis, Mo.) each collecting four block assists. Wagner also led the team in kills with 13, while Oginni and Cassady Reno (FR/O'Fallon, Ill.) each put down 12. Julia Huyhn claimed 27 digs as libero, and Kacie Kinnikin (FR/Belleville, Ill.) had 39 assists.
The Eutectics are now 0-5 (0-1 in the AMC). On Thursday, Sept. 14, they will travel to Carlinville, Ill., to take on Blackburn College before heading back to the STLCOP gymnasium on Friday to host Crowley's Ridge College and Trinity International University for a tri-match beginning at 4 p.m.
