The Eutectic women's soccer team held tough in the first half of the game against conference foe Harris-Stowe State University tonight at Maplewood-Richmond Heights High School. Unfortunately, things fell apart in the second half as the Hornets scored five goals in 14 minutes to win the game, 5-0.
Eutectic goalkeeper Kylee Lewis (FR/Fisk, Mo.) kept busy in the first half, making six saves to hold the score at zeros. The Hornets took 12 shots to the Eutectics' one in the first half, but Lewis and the Eutectic defense were able to fend off the HSSU attacks.
Things went south for the Euts in the second half, when HSSU's Victoria Sample scored back to back goals at 57:22 and 64:30. From there, the Lady Euts seemed to lose steam, as three more Hornet shots made it in the net in the next seven minutes. Lewis and the Eutectic defense put up a fight, fending off 18 of the 23 HSSU shots in the second half, but in addition to Sample, Justice Corn, Yuliana Noyola Miranda, and Lyla Rudloff (off assists from Katilyn Johnson and Corn) each scored.
The Eutectics did have three shots in the second half, including two shots on goal from Mattison Morgan (SO/Litchfield, Ill.) and one from Morgan Geissler (SR/Carbondale, Ill.). Lewis collected 15 saves on the night. After tonight's game, she is averaging 9.67 saves per game, with 58 total saves, ranking her 11th and 16th in the NAIA for those goalie stats.
Tonight was the first conference win for the Hornets. The Eutectics are still looking for an AMC victory (0-4) with a record of 2-5 for the season.
Next up for the Lady Euts is a trip to Batesville, Ark., on Saturday, Sept. 30. They will take on Lyon College for an 11 a.m. AMC matchup.
