Three Harris-Stowe State University Hornets goals in the second half of tonight's AMC battle at Maplewood-Richmond Heights High School caused the defeat of the St. Louis College of Pharmacy Eutectic men's soccer team, 3-0.
The two teams battled hard in the first half, and despite a 6 (HSSU) to 3 (STLCOP) shot differential, the teams went into halftime scoreless. STLCOP's Pedro Salgueiro (SO/Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and the Hornets' John Jancewicz came away from the half with three goalie saves apiece.
Five minutes into the second half, HSSU's Erick Kayongo knocked in the first goal of the game. Five shots later, Sanchayn Lawrence score the Hornets' second goal off an assist from Sergio Pomajambo at 66:14. Lawrence repeated the goal three minutes after that, to make it 3-0 – Hornets. That score would remain when the final buzzer sounded to signal the end of the game.
The Hornets really put the pressure on the Euts in the second half, taking 14 shots to the Eutectic two. Salgueiro stopped 10 HSSU shots on goal to add to his season total. He is currently ranked third in the NAIA for Saves per Game at 10.20 and 9th for Total Saves at 51, leading both lists in the AMC.
Jancewicz recorded three saves for the Hornets at goal, and Isiah Aldrich, who subbed in later, earned one save.
The Hornets picked up their second conference win tonight to get to a record of 3-5 (2-2 AMC). The Eutectics are currently 1-5 (0-3 AMC). On Saturday, Sept. 30, the Euts continue with conference competition when they travel to Batesville, Ark., for a 1:30 p.m. game at Lyon College.
