UHSP lands AMC POW for second straight week
UHSP starting pitcher Tristan Calmes was named the Pitcher of the Week by the American Midwest Conference on Monday for the week of February 3-9. It is the second consecutive week that a Eutectic has been named the conference's Player of the Week after Ethan Harrell was named the offensive POW the week prior. Calmes and Harrell are the first two UHSP baseball players to ever receive the weekly award through the AMC.
Calmes was on the mound for the third game of a four-game series on Sunday against the Texas College Steers, making his first start of the season. The righthander was dominant going five innings allowing one run on only one hit, but striking out ten Steers batters. He opened up the game by fanning the leadoff hitter, Christopher Germanos. That was the start to an absolute gem spun by the Curaçao native. He struck out a pair in the second, two more in the third and then two in each the fourth and fifth innings. In all, he struck out every hitter in the Texas College lineup at least once with the exception Jacob Sanders in the eight-spot, who recorded the Steers lone hit and scored their only run.
Calmes is coming off a year in which he led the Eutectics in innings pitched with 54.0, strikeouts with 53 and ERA at 5.50. He compiled a record of 2-7 on the season last season.
Kaden Kinsler of William Woods was named the offensive Player of the Week for his performance over the same counting period. He was 5-for-10, with four extra-base hits, six runs and 12 RBI including three homeruns. Kinsler beat out seven other nominees for the Player of the Week award including UHSP's Holden Campbell.
