FULTON, MO – The Eutectics went on the road and dropped a pair of non-conference games against the Westminster Blue Jays. In the opener, it was a seven-run second inning that turned the game in favor of the home club for an 8-0 victory even though the hits in the game were even at four. In game two, it was a leadoff walk in the bottom of the seventh that did in the Eutectics as Troy Romero would walk, steal second and score on Cameron Schlegl's walk-off game-winning single two batters later to give WC a 2-1 win.
GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS:
WESTMINSTER 8, UHSP 0
- Nolan Harding got the start for the Eutectics and lasted just an inning and a third. He allowed five runs on three hits and walked a pair.
- Joshua Escobedo tossed a scoreless five innings to get the win for Westminster. He scattered three hits, walked one and fanned four.
- UHSP used four pitchers and none of them would go two innings.
- Brandon Gibbs had a solid day atop the UHSP lineup going 2-for-2 and stealing two bases.
- Cameron Schlegl and Braden Eye each drove in two for the Jays.
- Beno Ballard had the biggest blow in the 7-run second with a grand slam. It was his first homer of the season, his first RBI's and his second hit. He had gone nearly a month since his only other hit which came in the Westminster season opener on Feb. 14.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS:
WESTMINSTER 2, UHSP 1
- Logan Stribling leadoff the fourth in a scoreless game with a double. He would score on a Jordan Gonzalez sac fly to make it a 1-0 game.
- Troy Romero equaled Gonzalez's sac fly with one of his own an inning later to tie the game.
- Deklan Riggs started on the mound and threw three shutout frames. He fanned and walked three and gave only one hit.
- Brayden Steves came on in the sixth and ended up going 1.1IP. He would walk four, strikeout two and give up the Schlegl hit in the seventh to be saddled with the loss.
UP NEXT:
The Eutectics (8-14, 5-7 AMC) will try to regroup when they entertain the Patriots of Mission (13-5, 8-4 AMC) on Friday and Saturday for the dual-doubleheader AMC series. It likely means the return to the hill for Barrett Lohman, the now reigning back-to-back AMC Pitcher of the Week. He is coming off a 2-1 win over Missouri Baptist last Friday.
