Eutectics Split at WWU on Saturday

FULTON, MO.  – After splitting a doubleheader at William Woods University Owl's (6-6) home field on Friday, the Eutectic baseball team returned to the venue to finish off the two-day non-Conference series with the same results. The UHSP team suffered a 6-2 loss in Game 3, then returned to the field with firepower to win Game 4 at 15-13.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

GAME 1: WILLIAM WOODS 6, UHSP 2

  • Last week's AMC Pitcher of the Week Tristan Calmes started off Game 3 on the mound for the Eutectics, holding the Owls scoreless until the third inning. That's when a bases-loaded walk, followed by a passed ball and a wild pitch sent three Owls across the plate.
  • Jacob Grim homered in the top of the fourth to mark the board for the Eutectics at 3-1.
  • The Owls returned in the bottom of the inning to score three more runs on four hits off UHSP pitcher John McGee.
  • Grim earned his second RBI of the game in the top of the fifth, reaching first on a dropped strike and pushing Holden Campbell home to get to 6-2.
  • The next two at-bats for the Eutectics yielded only one hit and the game was called in favor of the Owls after 6.5 innings with a score of 6-2.
  • Grim led the Euts on offense, going 2-4 from the plate (including the home run) and recording one RBI and one run.
  • Calmes was charge with the loss after 2.1 innings, giving up three hits and two earned runs, and walking six.
  • Owl pitcher Jakob Koehn recorded the win with one earned run, four strikeouts, three hits, and five walks in 4.2 innings.

GAME 2: UHSP 15, WILLIAM WOODS 13

  • The Eutectics scored four runs in their first at-bat of six hits, including a double by Liam Macphie and a stolen base by Holden Campbell. The Owls were able to push one unearned run across the plate in the bottom of the inning to make it 4-1 after one.
  • In the top of the second, the Euts scored another three runs off hits from Campbell and Grim before the Owls followed up with two of their own to put the UHSP team up 7-3 after two innings.
  • After a scoreless third inning, the Eutectics added four more runs in the fourth by taking advantage of three errors and two hits. Then, after holding the Owls in the bottom of the fourth, the Purple and Gold posted two more runs off two walks and a sac fly in the top of the fifth to take a 13-3 lead.
  • When the Owls closed the gap to 13-6 in the bottom of the fifth, the Eutectics knocked in two more runs in the top of the sixth off an RBI single from Nolan Harding and a passed ball scored Macphie.
  • Despite UHSP's 15-6 cushion, the Owls' seven-runs off three hits and three errors in the bottom of the sixth put the Euts on alert.
  • But, neither team were able to change the 15-13 score in the final inning and the Eutectics closed out the game with the win.
  • Jacob Grim pitched 4.1 innings, giving up one earned run, three hits, six runs and six walks, and striking out six to earn the win. Holden Campbell claimed the save after one inning, with one strikeout, one walk, and one hit.
  • The UHSP pitchers were also weapons at the plate. Campbell went 3-3, including a double, and added three runs to pace the Eutectics. Grim went 2-4 with two RBIs and three runs. Macphie went 2-3 with one RBI and one run.
  • Aidan Gaither paced the Owls, going 3-4 with one RBI and one run. Brayden Groseclose pitched 0.1 innings for the loss, giving up four earned runs off five hits.
