Eutectics keep on rolling with comeback win over Principia
ALTON, IL – Two teams that came in white hot at the plate of course played a pitcher's duel on Tuesday night. Both UHSP and Principia were coming off respective three-game series where they each scored 47 runs in three-game sweeps. But offense was not the order of business on this night in what turned out to be a 5-4 Eutectic win. A four-run seventh turned the tide as UHSP has now won five straight to get back to .500.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
UHSP 5, PRINCIPIA 4
- Principia took a 1-0 in the second against UHSP starter Pierce Love. Kailis Mayo doubled to lead-off the inning and eventually scored on an RBI groundout from Justice Fortson. Jackson Wininger got the final out of the frame as the Panthers left the bases loaded.
- The Panthers added another RBI groundout in the third to take a 2-0 lead, but Wininger avoided any further trouble by striking out Josh Bayless to end the inning and strand two in scoring position.
- Jackson Hewitt notched his tenth RBI as he drove in Holden Campbell to make it a 2-1 game in the bottom of the third, but the Eutectics left the bases loaded in the frame.
- Brandon Gibbs extended his consecutive game hitting streak to 14 with a two-out double down the leftfield line in the sixth. He has now reached safely in 21 of the last 22 games.
- Braxton Ramsey extended the Panther lead to 3-1 with a sac fly in the seventh.
- Jackson Hewitt promptly got that run right back in the bottom of the inning with an RBI double down the rightfield line to drive home Nolan Harding who walked to start the inning. Gibbs collected his second hit of the game with an RBI single to left to extend the lead to 5-3.
- With a run in and the go-ahead runs on, John McGee came on in relief and on three pitches struck out Johnny Garcia to keep UHSP in front 5-4. McGee ended up picking up his first save of the year getting four outs.
- Logan Stribling earned the win in relief (1-1) allowing a run on two hits over two innings with a strikeout. Nick Dolci took the loss giving up four runs on five hits while walking one.
- UHSP leads the series 3-1.
- The game endured a 47-minute lightning delay in the bottom of the third.
NEXT UP:
The Eutectics (15-15, 7-5 AMC) will be on the road this coming weekend when they travel to Springfield, MO to face the Mission Patriots (22-18, 9-3 AMC). A doubleheader on Thursday at 4:00p gets the three-game weekend series underway followed by a single game on Friday at 4:00p. The Patriots are coming off a weekend in which they took two of three from Central Baptist.
