Warda handcuffs Eutectic hitters as Brescia wins 8-2

ALTON, IL – Tuesday afternoon featured the first-ever game between UHSP and Brescia. Dylan Warda was masterful for the Bearcats in his longest and best outing of the season. A four-run first inning was plenty to back Warda as he tossed seven one-hit innings leading Brescia to an 8-2 win. The Eutectics were held to a program-low one hit in the game as Brandon Gibbs saw his 17-game hit streak come to an end.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

BRESCIA 8, UHSP 2

  • Hayden Jones singled home two as part of a four-run first for Brescia off Eutectic starter Pierce Love.
  • Brandon Gibbs and Holden Campbell drew back-to-back walks in the bottom of the first. On a double steal, a throw to third from catcher Lucas Feldman went into leftfield allowing Gibbs to score and putting Campbell at third. Campbell scored an infield groundout by Nolan Harding to cut the deficit to 4-2.
  • Grant Huebner and Max Johnson added to the Bearcat lead with RBI hits in the second and third as Brescia took a 6-2 lead. Johnson went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored in the win.
  • Dustin Aleck broke up the no-hitter with a pinch-hit leadoff infield single to start the eighth. Aleck hit a comebacker that glanced off the glove of Warda and settled between the mound and shortstop. The Eutectics loaded the bases with nobody out and the top of the lineup due up, but Matthew Escalera relieved Warda and got out of it with a fielder's choice, strikeout and a fly out.
  • Michael Ascencio capped the scoring hitting a two-run homerun to dead centerfield in the ninth, his second homer of the season.
  • The one hit by UHSP was their fewest in a game in program history.
  • Love took the loss (0-2) allowing four runs on three hits in just one inning of work. He walked and fanned one.
  • Warda (2-3) allowed two runs, one earned allowing just the one hit. He walked four and struck out five. His longest outing previously this year was in the season opener when he went 4.1IP against Aquinas.
