Eutectics get plenty of offense and finish out sweep of Harris-Stowe

ST. LOUIS, MO – The Eutectics got plenty of offense on Saturday afternoon as they piled up a total of 25 hits over two games and finished out a three-game sweep of Harris Stowe with wins of 10-4 and 14-9. Tristan Calmes and Jacob Grim picked up wins on the hill while Grim also hit homeruns in both legs of the Saturday twinbill and went 4-for-7 with five runs scored and four RBI's.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

GAME 1 – UHSP 10, HARRIS-STOWE 4

  • The Eutectics got to work early against HSSU starter Dakota Gaines scoring two in the first. Brandon Gibbs doubled to lead off the game, stole third and scored when the throw from catcher Ian Funk went into left field. Holden Campbell was hit by a pitch and scored on a sac fly from Joe Celeste.
  • With one out in the third, Jacob Grim doubled to left and two batters later, Dustin Aleck delivered a two-run homerun to left to make it 4-0. It was Aleck's first homerun of the season.
  • After the Hornets plated a run in the bottom of the third, Celeste offered his second sac fly of the game in the fifth to score Nolan Harding who had walked. That made it 5-1, but the Eutectics missed a chance to blow it wide open as they left the bases loaded, but it was only a matter of time before the offense exploded.
  • Harris-Stowe made it a 5-2 game with an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth.
  • UHSP opened up a five-run seventh with a leadoff homerun from Grim, his sixth of the year and his first since Feb. 28. Ethan Harrell, Gibbs and Campbell would add RBI hits as the Eutectics were able to produce a big inning and took a 10-2 lead.
  • Eutectic starter Tristan Calmes battled some control issues as he did walk six, but he also struck out six and yielded only two hits with a run. He improved to 4-4 with the win.
  • Gaines endured the loss for the Hornets as in 4.2IP he gave five runs on five hits, walked five and struck out one.
  • Harris-Stowe scored two cosmetic runs in the home half of the seventh off of Gavin Long.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

GAME 2 – UHSP 14, HARRIS-STOWE 9

  • The Eutectics jumped all over Harris-Stowe in game two taking a 7-1 lead through two and a half innings. A four-run, five-hit first began on Brandon Gibbs's leadoff single as he opened both games with a leadoff hit. After the Hornets recorded two outs, the Eutectics got a two-run homer from Jacob Grim, his second in as many games and seventh of the year. Deklan Riggs added a two-run single to cap the frame and stake UHSP to the early lead. Hayden Waters got the Hornets on the board in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single. He would drive in another run with an RBI hit in the third.
  • Grim added another RBI in the third followed by a two-run double to left from Jackson Hewitt to make it 7-1.
  • The Eutectics sent nine men to the plate in the fourth and scored four more times. Holden Campbell singled to right field to drive in a run with another scoring on the play due to an error. Holden Campbell scored on an error due to a steal of second by Nolan Harding. Harding would later score on a hit by Joe Celeste and the Eutectics led 11-2 after three and a half.
  • After HSSU scored twice in the bottom of the fourth, Brandon Gibbs walked with one out in the fifth. He would proceed to steal second, third and home to make it 12-4.
  • Jackson Hewitt had a two-run single to left in the eighth, while Harris-Stowe scored four times in the bottom of the inning on an Andrew Kobe homerun, a two-run double from Alexander Fernandez and a wild pitch. Tashaun Coleman homered in the ninth to finish out the scoring. Hewitt finished 3-for-4 with four RBI's.
  • Jacob Grim (6-1) got the start for the Eutectics and went seven frames. He struck out six without allowing a walk while giving four runs on ten hits.
  • Tre Whiting (0-4) took the loss for HSSU as seven runs scored against him on eight hits. He walked and struck out one. He was one of seven pitchers that the Hornets used in the game.
  • UHSP leads the all-time series, 8-2 after finishing out a three-game sweep.

NEXT UP:

UHSP (19-18, 11-7 AMC) plays their final road game of the regular season at Principia (5-20, 0-12 SLIAC) on Tuesday at 6:30p. It is a rematch of a March 31st contest in Alton, IL between the two with the Eutectics edging the Panthers, 5-4. The regular season then wraps up next Friday and Saturday in a three-game home series against Columbia.
