Upset-minded Eutectics' playoff run comes to an end
ST. LOUIS, MO – The UHSP Esports team wrapped up the CLOL League of Legends National Tournament finishing tied for seventh place overall, ending an impressive run for the Eutectics. UHSP entered the field as the #19-seed, thus having to come out of the Lower Bracket as the Upper Bracket is reserved for the top-16 teams in the tournament. UHSP fell to St. Thomas, 3-1 to end their tournament run as they lost in the Round of 8.
It was a remarkable run for the Eutectics in the postseason. They ended the regular season 4-1, but split their final four playoff matches, with both their losses coming to Illinois State by 3-0 scores. Heading into the CLOL Nationals, UHSP was seeded 19th.
Up first for the Eutectics in the CLOL National Tournament were the 30th-ranked Longhorns of Texas. UHSP shutout Texas 3-0 and moved on to face the Western Conference Champions, #9-seed California-Irvine. The Eutectics landed a major upset win over UCI, prevailing 3-1. The next round was a 3-0 win over #16 Toronto-Mississauga. In round four of the Tournament, the Eutectics against ran into Illinois State after ISU got bumped from the Upper Bracket in the Quarterfinals by #2-seed Mississippi. The 7th-seeded Redbirds were poised for their third straight win over UHSP, but the Eutectics knocked out Illinois State with a 3-1 win to advance to the Round of 8.
In the Upper Bracket, 1-Maryville, 2-Ole Miss, 4-Fisher and 11-Western all reached the semifinals. The lone top seed that failed to advance that far was 3-St. Thomas following an upset loss to Western in the Quarterfinals. It was that St. Thomas team that the Eutectics faced in the Round of 8. The Celts were the champions of the South Conference and had won back-to-back Collegiate Championships in 2022 and 2023. St. Thomas would go on to eliminate the Eutectics, 3-1.
