Eutectics Compete at Joey Haines Invite
The Eutectic men's and women's track and field teams travelled to Cape Girardeau, Mo., on Saturday to compete in the Joey Haines Invite hosted by Southeast Missouri State University. It was the second outdoor meet of the season for the Eutectics and the level of competition was strong, with a large field of NCAA Division I and II teams.
The UHSP women's team consisted of 13 athletes, with six of those being throwers. Freshman throwers Elizabeth Fritzler and Hanna Burch each improved on personal records set two weeks ago in the Discus Throw. Fritzler smashed her previous best by nearly four meters in the event with a toss of 36.92m (121'01.5") to finish 13th of 32 throwers. The mark puts her as the third-best Discus thrower in UHSP history. Burch's mark of 29.56m (96'11.75") was a 7.5" improvement and put her finish in the meet at 24th. Fritzler also shined in the Shot Put, finishing 17th of 31 throwers with a toss of 10.96m (35'11.5").
Lilly Combs finished second in her flight in the Javelin Throw to end up 16th of 28 overall at 27.29m (89'06.5"). Brianna Ramsey threw a personal-best in the Javelin at 25.21m (82'08.5") to finish 20th. She also finished 19th of 30 in the Hammer Throw with a toss of 38.37m (125'10.5").
The Eutectics brought three hurdlers to the meet: Taylor Washington, Mariah Scott, and Paulina Gutierrez-Trejo. Washington led the UHSP contingency in the 100m Hurdles, picking up an 11th-place finish (of 25) with a time of 15.80. Running the event for the second time in their careers, Scott and Gutierrez-Trejo each improved their time from two weeks ago, with Scott finishing in 19th place at 17.50 and Gutierrez-Trejo in 24th at 18.79.
Abby Baxter was one of two entrants in the 3,000m Steeplechase. She improved her personal best by over a second, finishing at 14:05.33.
On the men's side, Marlon Brown improved his time in the 400m Dash, finishing in 26th place (of 38) with a time of 53.62. Jared Morales also improved his PR to 53.97 for 29th place in the event. Jack Wolfe led UHSP's three entrants in the 800m Run, finishing in 26th. His time of 2:11.83 was a 12-second improvement from his first meet this season. Jeremy Smith also ran a personal best in the event with a time of 2:14.73.
Nick Fiacco improved his Discus Throw with a mark of 33.04m (108'05") for 24th place. Colten Duvall finished 11th of 18 in the Javelin Throw at 37.05m (121'07").
The Eutectics will remain in St. Louis for their competition at the Billiken Invite hosted by St. Louis University on Friday, April 5.
