Eutectics Take a Set off Tough Defenders

ST. LOUIS, MO. – The Eutectic men's volleyball team hosted the Dordt University Defenders on Saturday morning in the UHSP gym for a Heart of America Athletic Conference (HEART) contest. The Defenders were coming off a 3-1 victory over Missouri Baptist on Friday. After two close set losses, the Eutectics were able to take Set 3 off the Defenders (12-4, 4-2 HEART), but fell in Set 4 to lose 3-1.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:

Dordt Def. UHSP 25-22, 25-22, 23-25, 25-20

  • After a slow start resulting in a 10-3 deficit in Set 1, the Eutectics crept their way back to within striking range to get to 23-19. With Cameron Werner's kill (assisted by Gabriel Schneekloth), a double block from Werner and Dickson Colado, and a Dordt attack error, the Euts held off three set points from Dordt to get to 24-22. But, Dordt attacker Kai Chapman eventually ended the UHSP run to finish the set at 25-22.
  • The Eutectics had the upper hand in the early points of Set 2, going up 4-0 as the Defenders committed attacking errors. The Eutectics maintained the lead through 17-14, but tough serving from Dordt's Cade Schmidt had the Eutectics scrambling as he led the Defenders through six points in a row to take a 20-17 lead. The Visitors won the set with a score of 25-22 again.
  • After a 6-3 deficit in Set 3, the Eutectics had their own five-point scoring run to take an 8-6 lead after a kill from Maxwell McVickers set up by Schneekloth. The scrappy UHSP team fought to hold onto that lead until back-to-back kills from the Defenders tied the score at 23 apiece. The Eutectics, however, followed up with kills from Cooper Hansen and Grant Hoover to close out the set with a win at 25-23.
  • The Defenders returned to the court in Set 4 with vigor, setting up blocks and attacks to take a 15-9 lead. Back-to-back kills from Hansen and Hoover gave the Eutectics a fighting chance, getting them to 23-19. But, despite a kill from Colado to stave off one set point, the Dordt team clinched the match with a 25-20 win of Set 4 with a .414 attacking percentage.
  • Grant Hoover earned another double double, racking up 12 kills and 15 digs in the match. Cooper Hansen also reached double figures in kills with 11. Cameron Werner put up two solo blocks and two block assists. Setter Gabriel Shneekloth collected 34 assists, two aces, and four kills on six attempts.
  • The Defenders' Cory Kuperis was a blocking wall, involved in nine of the team's 14 blocks. Joel Van Gronigan recorded 21 kills, while Colt Schmidt picked up 14 digs.
