Hoover Reaches Milestone at MBU

ST. LOUIS, MO. – During Tuesday's 3-0 Eutectic men's volleyball loss at Missouri Baptist, junior captain Grant Hoover earned his 1,000th career kill. Hoover was already the UHSP record-holder for kills, with 765 prior to this season. With his 14th kill of the night and 235th of the season, he became the first Eutectic in program history to reach the 1,000 milestone. The Eutectics lost three close sets to the MBU Spartans (13-10, 7-7 HEART) at 25-22, 25-21, 25-22 to even the Heart of America Athletic Conference (HEART) series between the teams.

  • The Eutectics started off the match with a 9-4 lead, including aces from Hoover and Dickson Colado, along with kills from Maxwell McVickers, Hoover, and Cameron Werner, and blocks from Werner, Hoover, and RJ Dilks. The Spartans, however, took advantage of some Eutectic errors to win five of the next six points and tighten the score to 10-9. An MBU service ace by Isaac Allgeyer gave the home team their first lead of the night, and the Spartans would later count on Allgeyer for another ace that would give them a 23-21 lead, setting them up for the 25-22 Set 1 victory.
  • Set 2 saw several lead swings before the score would be tied at 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, and 19 before MBU was able to win to points in a row off a kill and a block to go up 21-19. Hoover would notch two more kills in the set, assisted by Dilks, but the final three points went in favor of the Spartans, who won the set at 25-21.
  • After getting down 3-0, the Eutectics won seven of the next eight points to take a 7-5 lead in Set 3. With UHSP up 14-11, an MBU timeout preceded a momentum swing that would give the Spartans a 17-16 lead. Hoover's 1,000th kill (assisted by Zachary Gavrick), put the Euts up 19-18, but the Spartans then strung together three kills and a block to take a 22-19 lead. UHSP won three points off MBU errors to tie the score at 22, but the Spartans put together two kills and an ace to close out the set at 25-22 and clinch the match in straight sets.
