Cottey pulls off Saturday sweep of UHSP

ST. LOUIS, MO – Amelia Gassman led Cottey to a pair of wins over UHSP on Saturday afternoon. Gassman picked up both wins in the circle for the Comets as she pitched a complete game 6-0 shutout win in the opener and then came on in relief in game two and earned the win in a 7-6 victory. In the second game, Lexi Knoll had an RBI single in the home half of the seventh to bring UHSP to within one, but the potential game-tying run was thrown out at third to end the game.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS:

COTTEY 6, UHSP 0

  • The Comets had two on and two out in the third after a single and an error. Grayce Taylor opened the scoring with an RBI single. Taylor went 2-for-4 for her eighth multi-hit games this year.
  • Cottey scored four times using four hits and a pair of UHSP errors in the fifth. The lone RBI was from Presley Tipton.
  • Emma Henley took the loss falling to 2-9 on the season. Only one of her six runs were earned as the Eutectics committed five errors in the contest. Henley struck out three.
  • Amelia Gassman (5-7) went the distance in the circle for CC to pick up the win. She scattered six hits, walked one and fanned five. She Gassman entered the game sixth in the AMC with 63 strikeouts.
  • Alicia Kimble and Trysten Murphy each went 2-for-3 with one of Murphy's hits being a double.
  • UHSP was outhit in the game 12-6.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS:

COTTEY 7, UHSP 6

  • Hallie Roper put the Eutectics in front 3-1 with a two-run homer in the third. Kailey Samora doubled to lead off the inning before Roper belted one to left for her team-leading third homerun of the season. She leads the team with 31 RBI's.
  • Bailey Cravens drilled a triple to score three in the fourth. She hit a sharp ground ball that took a wicked hop and got past Kaylin Haas and went all the way to the right-centerfield wall to put Cottey ahead 4-3.
  • Halen Hoelzeman hit her team-leading sixth homerun of the season with two outs in the sixth. It was a two-run shot to straight away centerfield. After three RBI's in each game, she now leads the club with 38 RBI's.
  • Trysten Murphy (1-4) went the distance for UHSP and took the loss allowing seven earned runs on 14 hits, while walking and fanning one.
  • Abigail McPherson went just three innings allowing three runs on four hits and did not factor in the decision.
  • Amelia Gassman (6-7) went the final four innings and yielded three runs on eight hits, one walk and four strikeouts.
