Harris-Stowe uses big third quarter to pull away from UHSP

ST. LOUIS, MO – The Eutectics met their Gateway City neighbor on Thursday night and fell to Harris-Stowe, 76-69. UHSP had a one-point lead at the half, but a 21-11 third quarter in favor of the Hornets turned the tide in favor of HSSU. The Hornets scored the first eight points of the third to take a 41-34 lead and never trailed the rest of the way. Alivia Montgomery scored 33 points in the win for Harris-Stowe to lead all scorers as the Hornets earned a split of the season series with the Eutectics.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

HARRIS-STOWE 76, UHSP 69

  • Midway through the first quarter, a Montgomery layup gave Harris-Stowe a 12-4 lead. The Hornets led by seven at the end of the first leading 17-10. HSSU made seven field goals in the quarter while UHSP had four. Cailynn Dilosa had half of her 18 points in the first quarter.
  • Another Montgomery layup 3:09 into the second built the Hornet lead to 23-11. The Eutectics immediately responded scoring 17 of the next 19 to take a 28-25 lead as UHSP got threes from Analyssa Maldonado and Arianna Buduan. The club's see-sawed the lead the rest of the quarter with a Maldonado jumper giving UHSP a 34-33 lead at the half.
  • Alivia Montgomery scored 12 points in the third as HSSU made seven field goals in the third while UHSP went 4-for-18 in the quarter as Harris-Stowe led 54-45 after three.
  • Alina Bowden scored 13 points in the fourth quarter for the Eutectics on 4-of-6 shooting and 4-of-5 at the line. The Eutectics got within seven multiple times in the fourth but could never get any closer.
  • Reece Halley had a double-double for UHSP with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Halley surpassed 1,000 career points as she entered the night needing eight points to reach that benchmark.
  • Alina Bowden's 17 points led the Eutectics in scoring as she added seven rebounds.
  • Montgomery missed just one three-pointer on the night going 8-of-9 in the game for Harris-Stowe. Cailynn Dilosa added nine boards and four steals.
  • The Hornets had just 11 turnovers in the contest to 17 for UHSP. Harris-Stowe turned the UHSP turnovers into 21 points while giving up just nine off turnovers.
  • The contest offered three ties and six lead changes.

There is one more game left in the regular season for the Eutectics (13-14, 10-7 AMC) and no better way to prepare for the upcoming AMC Postseason Tournament than to face the regular season champs. The Columbia Cougars (26-1, 17-0) come to St. Louis for a Saturday afternoon 2:00p tip to close out the regular season. Columbia handed it to the Eutectics 101-66 back on February 10 as they look for the season sweep.
