Eutectic Women Notch Win at SWIC
The Eutectic women's tennis team closed out its season with a 4-3 exhibition victory at Southwestern Illinois College in Belleville, Ill., on Wednesday.
The dynamic doubles duo of Angela Meaurio Martin (SO/Laspra, Asturias, Spain) and Erin Davis (SR/Aledo, Texas) improved on their UHSP single-season doubles record with a dominant 8-0 victory over (Loghan Phetsadasack/Joanna Cullen) on Court 1 to start the match. Ainsley Fortschneider (SO/Godfrey, Ill.) and Charlie Dunajcik (FR/St. Louis, Mo.) fought hard on Court 2, but ultimately lost 8-6 to Allison Peck and Brianna Weiss). With neither team able fill a third doubles court, the teams were tied 1-1 heading into singles play.
Meaurio Martin and Davis both scored points for the Eutectics with dominant wins in singles, as well. Angela Meaurio Martin made quick work of her Court 1 singles opponent (Abigail McIsaac), winning 6-2, 6-0. Erin Davis did not give up a single game in her victory over Allison Peck on Court 2 (6-0, 6-0).
SWIC earned a point from a UHSP default on Court 5, while Brianna Weiss tied up the match at 3-3 with a hard-fought 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-3) victory over Charlie Dunajcik on Court 4. Ultimately, the match was determined by another tie-break victory – this time won for the Eutectics by UHSP's Ainsley Fortschneider on Court 3. Fortschneider came back from a 6-1 first-set loss to win the second set at 6-4 and force a third-set tie-breaker against SWIC's Joanna Cullen. In the 10-point tie-break, Fortschneider prevailed, winning 10-7 to secure the match win for the Eutectic team.
With only four players on the roster this season, the Eutectics started every match defaulting three courts, which made their difficult schedule even more challenging. The victory over SWIC made for a satisfying finish to the tough season.
Head Coach Fernando Paiva said the athletes worked hard to continue to develop and advance their match play this season.
"I am very happy about the evolution all our ladies had," said Paiva. "From the technical and tactical aspects to the conditioning and mental aspects of the game, our ladies worked super hard and improved a lot this season. They are all playing much better and feeling more confident about their games and playing styles. I am extremely proud of them and I know they will keep working hard and improving even more on the next seasons to come."
