CLEAN SWEEP!! UHSP takes both AMC Player of the Week awards
ST. LOUIS, MO - Following a dominant start to the season, the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy was superior in the weekly awards category on Monday. The American Midwest Conference announced their offensive and defensive Player of the Week awards for the week of November 4-10 and UHSP swept the pair of awards. In the first season of offering two weekly awards as the conference added the Defensive Player of the Week award heading into this season, UHSP becomes the first school to sweep the pair of awards in this the third week of voting.
Ahian Barnett was named the AMC's Offensive Player of the Week after a dominant outing in both games for the Eutectics. Barnett beat out eight other nominees to claim the award, the first in his career. Brock Davis beat out five other nominees to land the AMC's Defensive Player of the Week award. Davis' widely outperformed the other candidates as he piled up 26 rebounds in the two games.
Barnett had 19 points and six rebounds in a season opening overtime win over Missouri Valley. Barnett hit a clutch baseline fadeaway in the corner to give USHP a two-point lead in their final possession of regulation forcing the Vikings to have to convert in the waning seconds to force OT. Barnett was 7-for-20 from the floor, 5-for-5 from the foul line and added three assists and steal in that contest. In game two, Barnett exploded for 29 points on 5-of-18 shooting, but was 17-for-26 from the free throw line. He completed a double-double with ten boards and also had four assists and two steals.
Davis, meanwhile, dominated on the glass in both games. He grabbed a dozen boards in the first game of the season, six of which were on the offensive end, and followed that up with a 14-rebound performance against Culver-Stockton coupled with two blocks and two steals. Davis combined to add 21 points in the two games. Davis earns his first career AMC Player of the Week award as a Eutectic after spending the previous two seasons in Columbia with the Cougars.
Davis and Barnett are the sixth and seventh Eutectics to ever win the weekly AMC Player of the Week award.
UHSP started the season with a pair of wins and are 2-0 for the first time since the 2011-2012 season. The Eutectics can match the 2011 team with a 3-0 start tonight if they can defeat Principia in Elsah, IL.
