DOWN GOES #4! Eutectics upset Georgetown in straight sets

ST. LOUIS, MO – It was a Saturday stunner at the UHSP Gymnasium as the UHSP Eutectics wiped out the 4th-ranked Georgetown Tigers in straight sets, 25-23, 25-20, 25-23. In the first-ever meeting between the two, the Eutectics hit .196 for the match while the Tigers struggled on offense and connected at just .060. Cooper Hansen turned out 15 kills on 28 chances to pace the Eutectics offense as he hit .464 for the match. The Eutectics rallied from 17-10 down in the opening frame to set the stage for the upset sweep in front of a boisterous home crowd.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Trailing 17-10 in the opener, UHSP got three kills from Grant Hoover and one from Cameron Werner in an eight-point stretch to make things manageable at 19-16. At 20-16, the Eutectics scored five straight to take a 21-20 lead. Kills from Maxwell McVickers and Cooper Hansen fueled the run to give the Eutectics their first lead since 1-0. After ties at 21, 22 and 23 UHSP took the set thanks to a pair of Georgetown errors.
  • Set two was tied nine different times leading into a 15-15 stalemate. UHSP got kills from McVickers, Werner and two from Hansen as they scored six of the next seven points around a pair of Tiger timeouts to lead 21-16. The clubs alternated the next eight points as the Eutectics took a 2-0 lead. UHSP hit a match-best .250 in the best having just four hitting errors.
  • Georgetown came out strong in the third. UHSP grabbed a quick 3-0 lead, but the Tigers took nine of the next 12 points to lead 9-6. Then it was UHSP's turn for a 6-3 run to level things at 12-12. Neither team managed a lead more than three the rest of the way and when UHSP took a 21-18 lead, the visitors promptly tied things at 21-all with a 3-0 run. After a GC service error, Zachary Gavrick played a ball softly to a vacated deep right corner for a 23-21 lead. After a Eutectic hitting error, Werner came up with the kill to give UHSP match point. McVickers put the clinching kill away to seal the win.
  • The win over the Tigers gives the Eutectics their best win over their highest ranked opponent in program history.
  • Gabriel Schneekloth racked up 33 assists on the day while defense was a full team effort led by Xavier Gamayo's eight digs.
  • Santino Zucchiatti led GU with 12 kills at hit .259 for the match. Andrew Mayhew had 19 assists for the Tigers while Ben Meyers had a team-high 12 digs.
  • Cameron Werner (7 kills) and Maxwell McVickers (6 kills) both hit .455 on the match.

NEXT UP:

It will be the first road game of the season for the Eutectics (2-2) as they travel to Culver-Stockton (1-5) on Tuesday. The Wildcats dropped their first five games including an 0-3 run at the HOA Challenge hosted by UHSP last weekend. The Cats snapped their season-opening skid with a 5-set win over Westminster on Wednesday. The matchup on Tuesday between CSC and UHSP will be the Heart Conference opener for both clubs.
