Mustangs Shutout Eutectics

ST. LOUIS, MO. – The Eutectic men's volleyball team hosted the #14-Morningside Mustangs from Sioux City, Iowa, on Friday night for a Heart of America Athletic Conference (HEART) matchup. The Euts went toe-to-toe with the 14-2 Mustangs for the first two sets, but ultimately fell in three.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:

Morningside def. UHSP 25-23, 25-23, 25-13

  • The Eutectics fell behind early in Set 1, but managed to tie it up at 12-12 off a kill by Cameron Werner (assisted by Gabriel Schneekloth), a double block from Werner and Dickson Colado, and an ace from David Quinones. The Eutectics were able to take the lead a few times following that, as the teams matched each other point for point.  But, the Mustangs strung together three points to take a 24-22 lead. The UHSP team fended off one set point with a kill by Colado, but the next point was a kill by the Mustangs to clinch the set at 25-23.
  • The Purple and Gold got out quickly to a 7-2 lead in Set 2, thanks to stellar blocking from Cooper Hansen, Werner, and Colado, and another ace from Quinones. The Mustangs, however, were able to work their way back to a tie at 12-12 and fought the Euts for every point after that, eventually winning the set off back-to-back kills at 25-23.
  • The 2-0 set deficit seemed to weigh heavily on the Eutectics in the third set. The home team fell behind 16-6 after losing nine points in a row before a kill by Zachary Gavrick (from Schneekloth) broke the Mustang scoring run. But, the 10-point deficit proved too much for the Eutectics to recover from and the Mustangs won the lopsided set 25-13 to clinch the match at 3-0.
  • Cameron Werner led a strong blocking performance by the Eutectics, recording seven block assists on the team's nine total blocks. Cooper Hansen led the Eutectics on offense with nine kills, Xavier Gamayo tallied 13 digs, and Gabriel Schneekloth recorded 23 assists.
  • Natan Alves had 14 kills, six digs, and an ace to pace the Mustangs.
