Stars Outshine Eutectics in St. Louis
ST. LOUIS, MO. – The Eutectic women's basketball team hosted Stephens College on Valentine's Day, looking to avenge their January loss on the road and replace the Stars as the third team in the American Midwest Conference (AMC) standings. On their home court, the Eutectics put up a good fight during the fast-paced game against the Stars, but ultimately fell 72-56 to keep their fourth-place standing in the Conference. The Stars finished the day with a Conference record of 11-4, while the Eutectics are now 10-6.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
STEPHENS 72, UHSP 56
- The action began right away as the Stars led 7-2 after a minute-and-a-half and maintained a healthy lead through the first period. With 53.3% shooting, Stephens pulled ahead by as much as 10 points (22-12) as their pesky defense held the Eutectics to 37.5%. The Stars held a 24-18 lead after the first quarter.
- Both teams' accuracy dropped in the second period, with Stephens scoring 12 points to the Eutectics' 11. At halftime, the Stars were up 36-29.
- The Stars opened the third quarter with a 12-0 scoring run to build a sizable lead 48-29 in the first four minutes. After a timeout, the Eutectics recovered a bit with their own eight-point run, including buckets from Reece Halley, Sara Hameed, and a triple from Alise Milenberga to get within 11 points at 48-37, but Stephens outshot UHSP 19-10 in the period to hold a 55-39 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.
- The Eutectics had their moments in the fourth quarter, including several made-layups from Reece Halley, as the home team matched Stephens at 17 points apiece. But, despite 46.2% shooting by UHSP, the Stephens lead was too much for the Eutectics to surmount.
- Reece Halley led the Eutectics in scoring with 17 points while also pitching in six rebounds and three steals. Aryanna Bull and Alise Milenberga each scored 10 points for UHSP, with Bull recording seven rebounds and Milenberga tallying five steals. Analyssa Maldonado nabbed nine rebounds to go along with her seven points. Sara Hameed (9), Ceili Ramirez (2), and Kierstyn Beard (1), also scored for the Eutectics.
- LaiJanique Perry-Ellis was top scorer in the game with 20 points, while teammate Quimari Shelton had 19 points and 13 rebounds.
NEXT UP:
The Eutectics are now 13-13 overall and 10-6 in the AMC. They will be back in action on Thursday, Feb. 19, when they head down the street to the home of St. Louis rivals Harris-Stowe State University (6-15, 5-10 AMC). The Eutectics are looking for a repeat of their victory over the Hornets back in January.
