Eutectics Compete in Day 2 of Home Tourney

ST. LOUIS, MO. – The Eutectic women's volleyball team closed out their home Eutectics Classic tournament on Saturday with two losses. For their first match of the day, the UHSP team lost in three sets to Friends University (Kan.)(10-3), who were 2-1 in the tournament. In the final match of the day, the Euts faced undefeated Evangel University (Mo.)(15-2). The Purple and Gold put up a good fight, but fell 3-0 to Valor.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:

Friends def. UHSP 25-23, 25-16, 25-23

  • The Eutectics kept things close early, tying up the first set at 17 apiece before the Falcons were able to notch some key kills and eventually close out the set.
  • In the second set, Friends took an early lead and built upon it, recording six aces along the way to secure the lopsided win.
  • The Eutectics turned the momentum around in the third set, following up Falcon errors with quality kills to go up 10-8. Tied at 18, UHSP lost the next three points in a row off a service error, an attack error, and a Falcon ace, allowing the Friends team to close out the set.
  • Sumanpreet Kaur led the Eutectics in attacks, recording nine kills on 24 attempts with only two errors (.292). Jenna Brinson picked up 24 assists and 12 digs, while MaKenzie Uribe notched 16 digs for the Eutectic team.

Evangel def. UHSP 25-18, 25-13, 25-22

  • The undefeated Evangel Valor pulled ahead quickly in the first set. Though the Eutectics kept the score close, they were never able to take over the lead.
  • The Eutectics started strong in the second set, but lost a 4-1 lead after a seven-point scoring run by the Valor, taking the wind out of the sails of the home team.
  • After a rocky start to the third set, the Eutectics put together a 7-4 scoring run with kills from Ava Bagett, Kiley Dyer, Sophia Michaud and an ace from Lindsey Ozier, to challenge the Valor at 10-10, then take a 13-11 lead off a tera Schumacher kill, a Valor error, and an ace from Hannah Duggan. The Valor were able to swing the momentum back with a couple of aces from Kenna Wise, along with key kills from the front line, and eventually win a tight third set to clinch the match.
  • Tera Schumacher had nine kills for the Eutectics, with Avanell Traylor picking up another eight. Brinson collected 19 assists, quietly chipping away at the Eutectics program record. Uribe, again reached 16 digs, and Michaud had two block assists.

Still searching for their first win of the season, the Eutectics will begin American Midwest Conference (AMC) play on Tuesday, Sept. 16, when they travel to Hannibal, Mo., to take on the Hannibal-LaGrange University Trojans at 6 p.m.
