Hornets Overtake Eutectics at End of First Half

ST. LOUIS, MO. – The Eutectic men's basketball team travelled down the street to complete the American Midwest Conference (AMC) home-and-home series with St. Louis rival Harris-Stowe State University on Thursday night. The Harris-Stowe Hornets (5-20, 2-12 AMC) pulled ahead in the latter part of the first half to claim a lead that the Eutectics could not chase down. Despite a close second half, the Hornets won the game 93-80 to go 2-0 against UHSP this season.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

HSSU 93, UHSP 80

  • Jasmin Suvalija set the tone for the Eutectics with a triple off an assist from Yigit Ekinci to start off the game. The Hornets answered back quickly, and the teams fought for the lead for the first 10 minutes.
  • The Eutectics held a 25-19 lead after a layup from David Moore at 10:14. But, that's where things went South for UHSP. HSSU's Antonio Trotter made four threes in a row in the next three minutes. The Hornets would not miss a field goal for the next six minutes, while the Eutectics would go 0-8 (including six 3-point field goals attempts) to fall behind by 17. The Hornets led 46-29 at the half.
  • The Eutectics fought hard in the second half, led by Landon Engelage's 13 points, shooting at 47.7% from the field and outscoring the Hornets 51-47 in the period. But, it wasn't enough to catch the Hornets, who continued with their consistent shooting, averaging 50% from the floor in the half, to maintain their sizable lead.
  • Led by solid rebounding by Engelage (8) and Brennen Walker (7), the Eutectics outrebounded the Hornets 50-40 in the game. The Hornets, however, forced 14 UHSP turnovers and only gave up nine of their own.
  • Bryant Odunayo and Engelage each score 17 points in the game for the Eutectics. Walker (11) and Ekinci (10) also reached double figures in scoring. The rest of the UHSP points came from: Greg Anderson (8), Moore (7), Carmello Bostwick (4), Suvalija (3), and Christian Harwood (3).
  • Nashawn Davis scored 23 points to lead HSSU.

UP NEXT:

The Eutectics are now 5-21 overall and 2-11 in the AMC with one Conference game left in the regular season. This Saturday, the Purple and Gold will host Conference leader Columbia College at 4 p.m. in the UHSP gymnasium.
