Eutectics nearly stun Mustangs, but late surge falls short

ST. LOUIS, MO – Central Baptist sent the Eutectics to their ninth consecutive defeat and swept the season series from UHSP with a 77-68 win. Landon Engelage poured in 29 points for UHSP to lead all scorers, but a furious second-half rally fell short for the home club.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

CENTRAL BAPTIST 77, UHSP 68

  • Nearly seven minutes into the first half, David Moore tied the game at 10-10 with a three-pointer. :28 seconds later, Greg Anderson did the same to even it at 13-13. CBC jumped out to a seven-point lead, but Landon Engelage cut it four with a triple with 6:59 left to make it 25-21. Over the ensuing 5:09, the Mustangs went on a 15-3 run to grab a 40-24 advantage and took a 42-26 lead to the break. UHSP 34.6% in the first half to 53.3% for the Mustangs. Tyler Johnson had 17 points of his team-high 25 in the first half.
  • Early in the second half, CBC went on a 9-0 run to open a 54-31 advantage. UHSP spent the rest of the game trying to fight their way back in it. Down 20 at 58-30, the Eutectics nearly pulled off the unthinkable storming back to close within two possessions at 60-55 with 5:28 left. Central Baptist held on making 11 of their final 14 free throws to prevent a stunning would-be comeback win by the Purple and Gold.
  • UHSP made three more triples than CBC (8 to 5), but the Mustangs shot 46.4% from the floor compared to 40% for UHSP.
  • Rebounds favored the visitors by six at 36-30. The game featured just 25 turnovers (UHSP 13, CBC 12).
  • The Eutectics near come-from-behind win was buoyed by Landon Engelage who scored 21 of his 29 in the second half. He was 8-for-14 from the floor in the second half and 4-for-5 at the foul line. Engelage had six boards and a pair of assists on the night.
  • Four of CBC's starting five scored double digits led by Johnson's 25 and then 15 points from MacArthur Reed, Jr. Caleb Knight added 12 points and seven rebounds and Derek Magwood had 11 points and seven boards.
  • Reigning AMC Defender of the Week, Brennen Walker for UHSP, recorded a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds.
  • CBC is now 24-1 all-time against the Eutectics and have won the last nine straight meetings.
